ABOUT

Dr. Larry Kirven has been a family practice physician at the JCHC since 1985. Dr. Kirven, who is from Buffalo, went to medical school at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He completed a three-year family practice residency in Spokane, Washington to become a board-certified family physician.

Dr. Kirven likes working in a small town because he gets to know the patients and their families. “When I worked in Spokane, I rarely encountered patients outside of the office or the hospital. In Buffalo you really interact with the community.” Dr. Kirven enjoys all areas of family practice, especially obstetrics, critical care and making a difficult diagnosis.

Dr. Kirven has seen some major improvements in the services offered in Johnson County. He said there has been a significant increase in the services offered, and the medical staff has become more diversified. “For a county of this size, we have a very well equipped hospital, which is a reflection of the support the people of Johnson County have given this hospital.” Dr. Kirven noted that the quality of medical care offered here is reflected in the recent approval by the University of Washington of JCHC as a training site for third year medical students.

Since he started practice in 1985, Dr. Kirven said healthcare has improved significantly. Fewer people require hospitalization, diagnostic testing has increased accuracy, surgical treatments are less invasive, and medical treatment is becoming increasingly based on evidence that proves the treatment is valid.

“The healthcare organization here has always been willing to change with the changing times which makes Buffalo a good place to work.”

Semi retired, Dr. Kirven now directs the residency program for the University of Washington students in Wyoming, and works part time at the Family Medical Center offering flight Physicals for pilots.
