Dr. Amber Kinner joined the Johnson County Healthcare Center in January 2021. She serves as Johnson County Healthcare Center’s primary hospitalist during weekday, daytime hours and as the dedicated physician for Amie Holt Care Center.

As the hospitalist, Dr. Kinner specializes in the care of inpatients at the hospital. She works in conjunction with our primary care providers and care support teams to design and oversee patients’ individualized treatment plans. She is readily available and dedicated to inpatients and the inpatient care team to address urgent issues, ensure care continuity, share information and discuss issues with family members.

Dr. Kinner grew up on a farm near Grinnell, Iowa. She became interested in medicine during an anatomy class in high school that a local doctor taught.

“What I like best about healthcare is the interactions I get with people during some of their most vulnerable moments,” Dr. Kinner said. “I like the critical thinking aspect, especially about hospital medicine.  But I also like to sit down with patients, pray with them, and find out what is important to them during their current crisis or time of need.”

Dr. Kinner relocated to Buffalo from Casper, where she served as a hospitalist physician at Wyoming Medical Center for the past 9.5 years. She earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Des Moines University and completed the Broadlawns Family Medicine Residency Program.

“I have always enjoyed inpatient care and taking care of patients who were acutely ill,” Dr. Kinner said. “My residency was at the county hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, and we saw such a wide variety of illnesses and diseases, especially in the hospital and that really made me interested in being a hospitalist.”

Dr. Kinner said she and her family have always loved the Bighorns and Buffalo. While living in Casper, they would drive to Buffalo to have dinner or go to the fish hatchery in Story.

“Buffalo has had a special place in our heart for years, and we are so excited to call it home,” she said.

In her free time, Dr. Kinner enjoys baking and cooking, hiking with her family, rock hunting, spending time with her Bible study friends, and gardening.
