Rehabilitation typically consists of one or a combination of physical, speech and occupational therapies:
- Physical therapy – This program is aimed at overcoming physical and functional limitations caused by injury or illness. You and your therapist will work on improving strength and regaining full range-of-motion. You could think of this as a general strength recovery program.
- Occupational therapy – While similar to physical therapy in that it is intended to rebuild strength, occupational therapy has more patient-specific goals. Occupational therapists learn more about your home and work life so they can direct treatment to address the functional limitations that prevent you from living your day-to-day activities.
- Speech therapy – There are many conditions that can inhibit a patient’s ability to speak. Speech therapists assist patients in overcoming speech, language, and swallowing disorders.
