My breast cancer journey – by Misty Sutton My story is very crazy… I actually went in to see Dr. Darnell to talk about my health fair results. We were just chatting about them, and he asked me when I had my last mammogram. I had my first base mammogram when I was 40. We tossed around the idea of having another exam since I was 43, getting close to 44. We talked about my history. I had no breast cancer in my family, I am not a smoker; I had a clear mammogram at 40, and was on birth control. In our conversation, at first, we thought since I had none of the “red” flags I could probably wait until 45 or 50. Thankfully, Dr. Darnell and I decided that I might as well have another mammogram, just for another baseline. Little did I know the chain of events that would follow. So, at age 43, I was diagnosed with DCIS (Ductal Carcinoma In Situ) stage 0, Level 3, Her2 negative. Since my diagnosis, it’s been a whirlwind of crazy. From telling friends, and family, meeting with what felt like hundreds of different people, to surgery, to radiation treatments, and ending with hormone blockers. I think seeing Dr. Darnell was a ‘God Thing’, but Dr. Darnell says it’s just his job. One question I always get is “could you feel it?” Nope! My tumor was the size of a golf ball and was next to my chest cavity. The only possible way they caught it as early as they did was with a mammogram. DCIS women must have the tumor removed surgically. That means either a mastectomy, depending on the outcome of the genetic tests, or a lumpectomy. Mine ended up being a lumpectomy, which removed a tennis ball sized section of tissue. You then have either radiation, chemotherapy or both. After my oncologist examined my test results and my biopsies, he said that within 6 months, I would have been in Stage 1 breast cancer and my story would be completely different… So I’m still here today to tell you that breast exams and mammograms really do save lives.
We confidently chose JCHC as the medical facility where I’d receive prenatal care and deliver two additional children. Dr. Jennifer Rice, and other members of the medical staff, made it a wonderful experience for our family.
Testimonial about Chelsea Puente, Family Medicine For several years, I supported my husband through very serious medical issues. Needless to say, I was not in a rush to have myself checked out (who knows what is lurking in there?). However, health issues caught up with me and I ended up in a room with Chelsea Puente, P.A. I love her! She and I are working as a team so that my body is happy and healthy. I see her in a timely fashion and trust her. Moreover, she takes time to explain things to me. She is fabulous!
Life has many twists, turns, and unexpected events! Such a one was when Dr. Gosar left JCHC and my former student, Dr. Ludwig, became my primary health provider. Ryan was a student at the Story Elementary School where I was teaching and he has said that he has fond memories of Story School and being one of my students! It is always rewarding to learn of a former student’s success, but to actually benefit from that success is truly amazing! Dr. Ludwig’s care, genuine concern, and professional knowledge is amazing in this day and age of seeming indifference to others, particularly elders. It is reassuring to know that should I need to be hospitalized at JCHC, Dr. Ludwig would be seeing me there. I am glad to know that JCHC stays independent and recognizes the importance of continuing personal care from one’s primary caregiver!
Dear Dr. Schueler, I would like to thank you, and all of the staff, at the Family Medical Center where I was treated after becoming ill while visiting Buffalo. Everyone was very kind, compassionate and professional. You listened to me, performed a thorough examination, and we agreed on the course of treatment. My symptoms improved in 24 hours and my trip back to Newport Beach was uneventful. I followed up with my personal physician after I completed the course of therapy, and he felt that I had completely recovered. Sincerely yours, Norman C Myers, M.D. Medical Director, Wellness Program Chair, Physician Well Being Committee Physician Leader, Schwartz Rounds St. Jude Medical Center Fullerton, CA
Dr. Mullen is a genuinely kind, caring and compassionate person. I appreciate how she always takes the time to attentively listen to me and make me feel that I am her top priority when in her care. We are very blessed to have Dr. Mullen and the exceptional care she provides our community.
I recently underwent rotator cuff surgery on my shoulder. I was very fortunate to be able to have this done at JCHC with Dr. Quinn performing the surgery. I just wanted to let you know how well everything went for me. Everyone I came in contact with was very professional and demonstrated skill and more importantly an open caring that the surgery went well for me. However, I need to single out Joey from Physical Therapy. I see Joey daily in my normal practice, and he seemed like a nice guy. As a patient under his care, I have to tell you that he is the most caring, professional healthcare worked I have ever encountered. He truly is exceptional. If we all could emulate Joey’s customer service ability, we would be a much better hospital. I just wanted to let you know! Thank you!
Recently, I had a student who delivered her baby in your facility. She could not stop raving about the wonderful care she received. Thank you for making birth a positive, wonderful experience for moms, dads and babies. I will definitely be sharing this wonderful experience with future students!
I first came to JCHC in the fall of 2014. I was three months pregnant and was not receiving the type of care I felt was of high quality at the time. My concerns were dismissed and I was treated like a policy number. It wasn’t until a made an appointment with Dr. Lisa Mullen that my entire experience shifted. I was a first-time mom experiencing a difficult pregnancy and I was terrified. I knew from the moment I was in Dr. Mullen’s presence that I would be seen as a person first – not a number or patient file – and I was no longer fearful. Dr. Mullen is someone with a uniquely gentle spirit who listens with intention, demonstrates compassion, and empathizes with your fears and concerns. She’s the kind of doctor who will hold your hand during labor and tell you, “you’ve got this.” These are traits largely missing from the general healthcare landscape. My family and I have been so impressed with the care she’s provided, along with rest of the members of JCHC – medical practitioners and staff alike – that we recommend your facility to everyone we know. It is more than worth the 34-mile drive from Sheridan – even while in labor! JCHC is the barometer by which other facilities should be measured. Thank you for your constant care and love.
I did all my prenatal care at the Family Medical Center and delivered all three of my children at JCHC. Even though each one didn’t go exactly as planned, I always felt well cared for and that each person that walked in the room only had my and my baby’s best interest in mind. Dr. Gonzalez always made sure all of us (me, my husband and my baby) were comfortable and doing well. He made sure to address any and all concerns and answer any questions we had. I felt well prepared for each delivery because of the care I was given during each of my pregnancies. He is an amazing doctor that truly cares about his patients. I would recommend Dr. Gonzalez and JCHC to anyone.
Dr. Rice, Crystal, Heidi and Surgery Crew, Thank you all for your detailed care for our family during the pregnancy and birth of our daughter, Chloe. We felt that we were always in the best hands and received top notch care. Although it was a long process that ended with a C-Section, we could not be more pleased with the outcome and how we were treated. We were very impressed with all the help we received with breast feeding, and felt that you all helped to prepare us as new parents. Thank you for all that you do!
1st I want to say thank you for the beautiful favors following the birth of our daughter Quinn. 2nd I want to say thank you to the amazing team that helped through pregnancy & delivery. This includes: Dr. Rice and the fabulous clinic team. Nichole Ferguson, Heather Gilbert, Mary Litzel, Jeff Edstrom (and i’m sure others I am forgetting). Buffalo is so blessed to have such an amazing team. I always felt like my daughters & I were in the best of hands! We are so blessed to have such a wonderful healthcare provider.
My husband and I struggled with infertility for 5 years before visiting with Dr. Darnell in 2017 about doing some sort of treatment. I had spoken with doctors before about it but was always told things like your young you have plenty of time ect. and was unable to find a doctor who would listen. I had never even thought about the possibility of asking my primary care doctor for help but once I did I was so pleasantly surprised! Not only did Dr. Darnell listen me he immediately took an active role in helping us to conceive. He prescribed a medication for me to start and a month later we were pregnant! After 5 years of infertility all it took was one doctor who was willing to listen and take me seriously and now we have our son. Throughout my entire pregnancy Dr. Darnell and my nurse Liz were so amazing! They always addressed my concerns with care and compassion and even though my pregnancy was higher risk I was able to deliver here in Buffalo at our hospital which was super important to me. I feel so blessed to have this hospital here and so grateful to have found such a wonderful doctor and nurse. I couldn’t be more happy with the care my family and I have received. It has gone well above and beyond what I expect as a patient! I would highly recommend our clinic and hospital for prenatal care!!
I’m not well versed but here goes… Thanks for letting us share! From the very first day I found out we were expecting I was a nervous wreck. As a nurse, I knew very well that bad things could happen, and do happen. My husband and I were overjoyed with the news we were going to have a baby and couldn’t wait for our first visit. We chose Dr. Mullen as our provider, and felt very lucky that we would have such great care with someone who is so passionate about their work. From that first visit on, she took the time to listen to my fears and calm my nerves, even with many phone calls in between appointments, and for that I thank her! The nursing staff at the clinic was also so wonderful about listening to my endless “what if’s” more times than I care to admit. When the big day finally came, it was an evening and I wasn’t really even sure I was in labor so we went in just to check. Sure enough, we were admitted and ready to get started on the next big chapter of our lives. The care we received from that moment on, and all of the support through laboring my first born, was absolutely wonderful. I felt so supported and encouraged, even when I felt like giving up and asking for an elective C-section. We were gifted a healthy baby girl, the best gift one could ever receive. I’ll never forget those moments of my life that started me on my journey to motherhood and the awesome team of care providers that shared the road with us! Thank you Dr. Mullen and all of the nursing staff both in the clinic and in the hospital for such a wonderful experience. We can’t wait to do it again sometime.
To the Kitchen Staff. Thanks for your personal attention. Especially the cut up apples! Your meals are delicious and I missed them when I was home. To the Nursing Staff. I wish to thank each and every one of you for my care during my stay. You made a difficult time a lot easier.
To me, Johnson County Health Care is not about the facilities I have watched expand and improve throughout my 82 years. (Although I am very thankful for that.) No. to me, Johnson County Health Care is about the PEOPLE. It’s about Nurse Lauri Prosinski realizing how uncomfortable I was and stuffing lots of pillows around my back so that I could sink into this puffy cloud and finally go to sleep. It’s about nurse Kay Philpott sitting at my bedside all night keeping me awake when I wanted to go to sleep permanently. It is about Dr. John Knebel assuring me I could call him any time, and I knew he meant it. It’s about Dr. Larry Kirven telling me about my 99 year old dad, “You know when you are desperately stranded in a cabin and all your wood is gone, and to survive, you have to start burning the furniture? Your Dad is burning the furniture.” It’s about Dr. Fehir asking me to stay a minute after helping my mother. She then asked how I was doing! She said, “Caregivers need support also.” It’s about Dr. Mark Schueler being with me in the ER in the middle of the night and after all the completed tests, staying to question and help me realize the multi stresses I was trying to avoid. It’s about Dr. Tabb going beyond ordering the tests I needed, to reassuring me with a hug when I was in so much pain. All these and more stories have convinced me throughout the years that I was listened to, cared for “above and beyond”, and that this wonderful medical facility was, and is, there for me. THANK YOU!
